Carpenter Ants



APPEARANCE:
Genus Camponotus, are among the largest ants. Ranging from 1/4" to 3/8" long. Most of the local species are black, but some Carpenter Ants have redish or yellowish coloration. The workers have very large pronounced mandibles (pinchers)

HABITS:
Normally nest in dead or water damaged portions of standing trees, stumps or logs or burrow under fallen logs or stones. Nests look like hollow "galleries" burrowed out of wood. Carpenter Ants will destroy wood in your home if they nest in your residence. Carpenter Ants will also envade your home in search of food sources. Foraging Carpenter Ants will travel up to 100 yards from the nest to find food.

DIET:
Carpenter Ants do not eat would like a termite, but will destroy wood to produce their nests. Carpenter Ants feed on a variety of plant and animal food. They prefer sweets and meats, but will also feed on other insects.

REPRODUCTION:
A Carpenter Ant Queen will lay 15 to 20 eggs the first year, and up to 30 eggs the second year. It takes the eggs around 60 days to hatch. Worker Ants can live up to seven years and the queen can live up to 25 years.

OTHER INFORMATION:
Hollow nests "galleries" are very smooth, they appear to have been sandpapered inside. Colonies can contain up to 3,000 workers, but usually have only one egg l;aying queen per colony.
