| Cimex lectularius Color: Mahogany to rusty brown; red after a blood meal Legs: 6 Shape: Flat; broad oval Size: 1/4 The Bed Bug is recently a growing problem. Infestation can sometimes be very difficult to eliminate. HABITAT: Bed Bugs live next to their food source, which happens to be you if they are in your house. They feed off of blood so they must live next to their hosts. They are nocturnal which leads to their name bed bugs, since they feed at night and you are usually in your bed at that time. They hide under pictures, electrical outlets, wall paper or any crack they can fit into around your sleeping area. THREAT: Feeding on your blood while your sleep, causing itchy red welts. They are not known to carry any diseases but secondary infection can occur from scratching. PREVENTION: Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation. Check your bedsheets for tell-tale blood spots. Consider bringing a large plastic trashbag to keep your suitcase in during hotel stays. Carry a small flashlight to assist you with quick visual inspections. Bed bugs are elusive creatures, so it is imperative to seek professional pest control to address an infestation. |
